*First time applicants to the Six and Eight week courses require a short video monologue submission to ensure students are ready for this intensive style training. It will be assessed by the head trainer Shanta, you will be notified of your placement as soon as possible *Successful applicants need apply only once

Foundations of Screen No.1 - 30th May

    Foundations Taster course introduces actors to and refreshes them in key acting processes including improvisation, script understanding, inner dialogue, Adler and objectives so they can use these to explore scenes for screen.

    Course overview:

    1. Improvisation - exercises as well as scenario and character exploration

    2. Script understanding - breaking down key elements of scripted scenes

    3. Scene study exploration

    4. Specificity

    Course Outcomes:

    To gain foundations in a range of tools for exploring scenes and characters

    To understand how these tools help actors to explore choices fo scenes

    To practise the tools with scripts

    To learn about developing these tools to extend the acting muscle

    Actors will have scenes in class filmed and these can be sent to actors on request

    This course assumes actors have had previous training in screen acting. We will be using a range of screen acting tools and processes to explore, develop and deliver monologues.

    Course Overview:

    Actors will bring in up to two monologue choices they would like to explore in the course.

    Actors will work with verbatim as well as scripted monologues to develop, exercise and practise tools and then apply them to their own monologue choices.

    Actors will review acting processes of improvisation, inner dialogue, script analysis, objectives, imagination and specificity and apply these tools to monologues.

    Course Outcomes:

    To extend monologue understanding, exploration and delivery for screen.

    To work with different types of monologues and apply tools to these.

    Actors will have a professionally filmed monologue at the end of the course as well as footage of exercises they would like to take home*

    *Actors will also be encouraged to bring a USB in with them to collect footage they would like to keep from class.

    Preparation:

    Actors will be invited to submit a filmed monologue choice and/or the script of the monologue before week 1

    Course Overview:

    Actors will work with verbatim as well as scripted monologues - Actors will bring in up to two monologues they would like to explore in class and will be provided with additional monologues/options to work with.

    Actors will apply acting processes of improvisation, inner dialogue, script analysis, objectives and imagination to monologue exploration, choices and delivery in class and in self tapes.

    Actors will apply monologue work to inform self tape scenes.

    Course Outcomes:

    To strengthen monologue exploration, choices and delivery for screen.

    To practise, apply and hone acting tools and fitness through monologue work.

    To extend character and scene understanding through monologue work.

    Actors will submit 4 monologue self tapes in the 8 week course as well as optional linked self tape scenes.

    *Actors are encouraged to bring a USB in with them to collect footage they would like to keep from class.

    Preparation:

    Please submit a self tape of a scripted monologue prior to the course (between 1min-4min) and please send through the script of the monologue with it.

    Please find at least one additional contrasting monologue to work on through the course. (around 3 minutes and not too much longer).

    Watch this reminder of Larry Moss' advice about the work actors should do every day and the way monologues can be a part of that.

    There is a limit of 10 places for this course.

    Please Note - if it is not the right time for an Industry Pace level course for you but you would still like to be in regular practise we will be running a Scene Study Monologues course that has fewer monologues and less taping but still working on monologue skills. If you would prefer that, the course info will be sent out soon to the wider Nicholson's Academy group.
